As a first-time experienced user, do not try this alone without the instruction. iPhone 5 can be easily hurt.
Every Internet post suggested to push hard into the pinhole to open the SIM tray, but it is wrong. Also, some says about "downside" but I didn't understand it, until I saw a movie clip on YouTube.
To open the tray, put the pin in the hole, and tilt to frontside, to make the tip push the far side from you. Now you can see that the tray pops out. You don't have to push any hard.
